The Dalai Lama may be stepping away from his long-standing role leading negotiations with Beijing on Tibet's future, but his role as Tibetans' spiritual leader will not change.

Buddhist monks, some hurling rocks, demonstrate outside a police station in Lhasa in October of 1987, during a pro-independence protest in the Tibetan capital. At least six persons were reported killed in the rioting.
